Days before the 2026 show, Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray posted herself in a lace bodysuit, silver heels, and huge white angel wings, with a caption that read “Wings up, we’re inbound.” She tagged Victoria Secret, used the show’s official hashtag, and showed up with platinum blonde hair. To many fans, it didn’t look like a guest outfit. It looked like a runway costume.

In the media, everything was accurate. The official announcement named her a “special guest representing the Philippines,” and she reposted it herself. But the announcement whispered and the photoshoot shouted. For a fanbase used to seeing her conquer stages, the message seemed obvious.

It wasn’t only fans who read it that way. Before the show, PEP.ph openly said it was unclear whether she would walk. When the entertainment press is asking the same question as the fans, blaming the audience for “assuming” doesn’t hold up. The confusion was built into the campaign.

Filipino viewers tuned in at 7:30 in the morning to watch the livestream. Catriona never appeared on the catwalk. She was in the front row, wearing a lacy, corseted gown by Filipino designer Job Dacon. The gown was striking. It was also not what the wings had promised.

What made it worse for some fans was the quiet from her side when the moment came. If there was a reason for the silence, it hasn’t been explained. One short post clarifying she would be in the front row, not on the runway, would have set expectations before the show started. No such clarification has been reported.

Fans aren’t blameless. Hope fills in gaps, and fandoms run on it. But campaigns are designed with that in mind. Dressing a guest appearance in runway imagery is a choice, whether it was made by Catriona’s team, the brand, or both. It counts on fan loyalty for promotion and leaves those fans to deal with the letdown on their own.

There was no lie here, and no broken contract. What was strained was trust, the bond between Catriona Gray and the Filipinos who carried her from the Lava Walk to the Miss Universe crown. A fanbase that has given that much loyalty deserves straight answers about where its queen will be standing, or sitting.

The catwalk went on without the Cat. Her fans were watching. This time, she didn’t meet them halfway.
